Question 4

When an average person looks at the Magritte’s painting of a pipe, he or she would think that it is a pipe. Under the picture it says “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” which means, “this is not a pipe”. Magritte wanted people to understand that what they saw was not a pipe; it was an image of a pipe and the image can show wealth and class. He made many paintings like this to help people realize that not everything is what they think it is. He wants people to see the deeper meaning of different things in everyday life and not what is seen at first glance.
