Question 6

Timothy Havens wrote the article “The biggest show in the world: race and the global popularity of The Cosby Show” discussing how The Cosby Show and many other black sitcoms have become globalized. This is very similar to the American Express advertisement where everyone in India knows of Conan O’Brien from his show Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The ad shows that his show has been globalized because everyone in Indian town knows him. Like My New Haircut Asian Edition, the advertisement shows the people of India to be very exotic. Since the advertisement is shown on American television, the producers of the ad are able to show just how exotic Indian culture is. The whole advertisement is about Conan wanting the finest silk and he goes everywhere to find it, showing that everyone in India make silk sheets, which is very unlike American culture, making these Indian people very exotic.
